Goldendoodle vs Cockapoo – A Detailed Comparison Of Both Dog Breeds

Hi there!  My name is Jess, and I live with my Cockapoo, Jimmy.

In making the choice to bring a dog into my family, I learned a lot about various breeds to help me make my final decision.

Although I ended up with Jimmy, I learned a lot about Goldendoodles too, which are a similar breed.

This article will compare the similarities and differences between the two breeds for anyone who may be looking to welcome a furry companion into his or her home.

Goldendoodle vs Cockapoo

Sharing a parent breed comes with many similarities, but there are a few key differences between Goldendoodles and Cockapoos that can influence a future dog owner’s decision.

Goldendoodles are large, friendly dogs who love being part of families.  They are playful and loving.

Cockapoos are small, loving dogs who worship their owners, are quick to forgive, and often seek attention and approval.

What to Consider When Getting a Dog?

There are a lot of considerations to go over before deciding if getting a dog is right for you.

Do you have the space in your home?  If you live with others, is everyone ready and willing to have a dog?  Can you financially support a dog?

One of the biggest considerations is if you can take care of a dog.

Some people who travel often may run into this obstacle since they spend a lot of time away from home.

Dogs need love, attention, and exercise, as well as the ability to go outside to take care of their business!

Overview of Goldendoodle

Goldendoodles are a designer dog breed that originated in the 1990s.  Also known as “Groodles,” they are a mix between Golden Retrievers and Poodles.

Although considered toy dogs, Goldendoodles are also known for being used as service and therapy dogs.  They are family-oriented and get along with other pets in the household.

They are gentle and loving, and popular among families.

They are usually larger dogs since they are bred from Golden Retrievers.

Goldendoodles are not known to be barkers and may not even make a sound if they see someone approaching the house.

They can be known to be fearful, but with proper training and socialization, they stick to their affectionate tendencies.

Overview of Cockapoo

Cockapoos are a designer breed between Cocker Spaniels and Poodles.  They are also known as Cockerpoos, Cock-a-poos, and even Cockapoodles.

They first originated in the 1960’s and have been a popular choice for dog owners ever since.

Cockapoos are toy dogs who are typically smaller in size.

They are extremely people-oriented and may not leave you alone.  They enjoy being the center of attention, but also love low key activities (including a lot of rest).

Cockapoos are generally quiet dogs but may bark if they see someone outside or if they are left alone too long.

Since they have adorable faces, small stature, and Poodle genes, they can be known to be prissy.  This attitude is ultimately up to the owners and how they choose to raise their Cockapoo.

Goldendoodle vs Cockapoo Size: Which is Bigger?

A cute goldendoodle puppy in the forestWhen it comes to size, Goldendoodles and Cockapoos vary greatly.  Goldendoodles are around 2 feet tall and weigh anywhere from 50 to 90 lbs.

Cockapoos, on the other hand, are typically around 1 foot 3 inches and their weight ranges from 19 to 30 pounds.

Jimmy used to weigh closer to 30 pounds himself, but after a more restrictive diet and optimal exercise, he is down to the mid-20s (where the vet recommended, he stays).

If you are looking for a smaller dog, a Cockapoo may be the way to go.  This is an important consideration for those who live in an apartment or a smaller living area.

Goldendoodle vs Cockapoo Temperament: How do They Behave?

Both Goldendoodles and Cockapoos are loyal and affectionate.

Both are people-oriented, but Goldendoodles tend to be more family-oriented where the Cockapoo may stick specifically to just their owners.

For example, Jimmy has definitely shown that he has “favorites” in our family, sometimes ignoring some of my brothers and only sticking to me or my dad.

Both breeds require low activity, but they love to play!  Goldendoodles need about 30 minutes of exercise everyday while Cockapoos only require about 15 minutes per day.

Goldendoodle vs Cockapoo Life Span: What’s Their Life Expectancy

Goldendoodles and Cockapoos have similar lifespans, though Cockapoos have less of a broad range.

Each can live up to 15 years, though Cockapoos span from 12-15 years while Goldendoodles average 10-15 years.

Goldendoodle vs Cockapoo Health: Are They Prone to Health Conditions

Goldendoodles are prone to hip problems, eye conditions, and skin conditions such as atopy.

Cockpaoos are prone to epilepsy, liver disease, heart disease, and teeth issues.

When Jimmy was 7, he had to get most of his teeth removed because they were rotting to the point of making him sick.  He also had really bad breath!

Thankfully, he is okay now, but had we been aware of this issue earlier, we would have implemented a brushing routine.

Knowing of possible health complications before they arise paired with routine vet visits will help your Goldendoodle or Cockapoo’s life to be healthy and fulfilling.

Goldendoodle vs Cockapoo Appearance: What do They Look Like?

A happy cockapoo dogGoldendoodles are tall and lean, while Cockapoos are short and compact.

Both breeds come in a variety of colors, such as blonde, black, brown, or a mix.

They each have fluffy coats that curl (like Poodles), adding to their cuteness.

Goldendoodle vs Cockapoo Shedding: What Kind of Coats do They Have?

Speaking of coats, both Goldendoodles and Cockapoos can be hypoallergenic!  All Cockapoos are, while Goldendoodles mostly are.

Cockapoos do not shed, which is ideal for dog owners who may suffer from allergies.

Goldendoodles have the ability to shed slightly, which is important to be aware of if you need a dog who is hypoallergenic.

Goldendoodle vs Cockapoo Grooming: How Much do They Require?

Since Goldendoodles have hair and can experience light shedding, it is important to brush their hair once a week (or every two weeks) to make sure their coats remain intact.

On the other hand, Cockapoos do not require grooming as often, since they do not shed and just have one long coat over their entire bodies.

Sometimes Cockapoos can get ear infections because their ears are completely covered up, so it is recommended to clean their ears every so often to reduce the risk.

Each breed should have their teeth brushed two to three times per week to prevent buildup.

Goldendoodle vs Cockapoo Training: Can They be Trained Easily?

A cute goldendoodle puppy in the gardenBoth Goldendoodles and Cockapoos are intelligent, and therefore, easy to train.  Both benefit greatly from positive reinforcement, so it is recommended to train them with treats and praise.

Goldendoodles require different training if they are used for service or therapy purposes.

It is recommended that Cockapoos are crate trained at a young age to ensure they are comfortable with their own space for retreat.

This helps when you leave the house and leave your Cockapoo alone, as they can become destructive when they’re lonely.

Goldendoodle vs Cockapoo Availability: Are They a Rare Dog Breed?

Neither Cockapoos nor Goldendoodles are rare breeds due to their increasing popularity, although, Chocolate Goldendoodles are extremely hard to find if that is your preference.

Both breeds can be found at specific breeders or animal shelters for adoption.  When getting a dog, please make sure you research the breeder you are considering before making a decision.

Goldendoodle vs Cockapoo Diet: What do They Eat?

Goldendoodles should be fed 1-4 cups of quality, dry food, multiple times a day.

Cockapoos should be fed 1/4th to 3/4th cups of dry food just twice a day.

Neither is particularly picky, but if you get into the habit of feeding them scraps from your food, you may develop a little beggar (who then becomes picky).

It is advised to research the food you feed your dog before implementing a routine.

Of course, it is always advised to consult with your dog’s veterinarian if you have any questions about specific food recommendations or sensitivities.

Goldendoodle vs Cockapoo Family Dog: Are They Good With Children?

Cockapoo dog on a beachGoldendoodles are great with children and maintain a gentle presence.  Cockapoos are not known to be as great with children, but they are not necessarily bad with them.

Socialization is a huge factor in their temperament with children.

For example, when we got Jimmy, everyone he was exposed to at an early age was at least 6 years old.  Because of this, he is great with children, but wary of babies.

When my baby cousin has come to visit, he tries to sniff her and sometimes does not realize he is getting too close to her, which we believe is a result of late exposure.

Goldendoodle vs Cockapoo Environment: Where Are They Best Suited?

Because of their larger size, Goldendoodles thrive in houses instead of apartments.

Alternatively, Cockapoos can thrive in even the smallest living spaces, since they do not take up much room and do not require much activity.

It is ideal for Goldendoodles to have a yard or a confined outdoors to run around in, but not absolutely necessary.

They have slightly more energy than Cockapoos and need a way to let it out.

Although climate doesn’t matter, neither breed can live outdoors.  They are more comfortable in their homes with their owners.

Goldendoodle vs Cockapoo Running Costs: Are They Expensive to Look After?

Neither Goldendoodles nor Cockapoos are expensive to look after.  They can each eat dry food, which can be purchased in bulk from retailers such as Amazon.

Although Goldendoodles need more frequent grooming, it can be taken care of easily at home.

There is no need to necessarily spend money on a professional if you get used to a routine.

As mentioned earlier, each breed is prone to certain health conditions.  These issues (or their escalation) can be prevented with the proper attention and care.

Conclusion: Goldendoodle vs Cockapoo

A well groomed goldendoodleIn summary, Goldendoodles are big friendly teddy bears who are great with kids and other household pets.

Cockapoos are precious, little shadows who follow you everywhere and are ready to cuddle anytime.

I would recommend a Goldendoodle for an owner seeking a calm, friendly, loveable pet who will be great with everyone in the household.

A Cockapoo would be perfect for a single owner or a couple who is looking for a cute little friend who is low maintenance and full of love.

But overall, between these two adorable breeds, you really can’t go wrong!
